Traiane! Pass the dutchie…

by Craig Turp September 23, 2009 Bucharest

As anyone who visits these pages regularly or follows us on Twitter will know, we are not big fans of Romanian President Traian Basescu. We think his failed attempt to Putinize Romania has embedded a political climate in which real debate is substituted with petty personal squabbles. He runs the country by press conference, and [...]

How to save the Romanian tourist industry: Don’t tell anyone it’s raining

by Craig Turp September 9, 2009 Media

Radu Moraru, a would-be shock-jock who hosts a nightly chat show on the Romanian TV channel B1, last night came up with perhaps the most brilliantly simple way to save the Romanian tourist industry: don’t tell the whole truth. His guest was Elena Udrea, Romania’s Minister of Tourism, hence the tourism theme. Moraru suggested that many [...]

A pasit Madonna pe pamantul romanesc!

by Craig Turp August 26, 2009 Bucharest

Yes, the chap in the Realitatea TV helicopter (given an outing yesterday to follow Madonna everywhere) really did say that. Antena 1′s scoop that wasn’t

by Craig Turp June 16, 2009 Media

In classic ‘no point checking if they’re for real’ style they broadcast them, complete with commentary from serious journo dudes. Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear.

A Bizarre Editorial Decision

by Craig Turp June 2, 2009 Media

Incredible but true. Adevarul, in its own words Romania’s ‘leading quality newspaper’ yesterday announced that it would ‘distance itself from politics‘ in the run up to Sunday’s European elections. Utterly bizarre. In a country where political reporting is basically useless, you would expect a self-entitled ‘quality’ to try and stand out from the pack with [...]

Swine flu tragedy hits Arad

by Craig Turp April 30, 2009 Media

There was more tragic news for Romania’s news agencies and television news stations today when a girl in Arad who sneezed several times in succession was found by doctors not to have swine flu. “We’ve been hoping for a local outbreak of swine flu all week,” said Adelin Petrisor, top reporter at Realitatea TV. “We [...]
