Number one son was seven yesterday, so as part of his birthday celebrations we took him to the cinema to see Ice Age 3, in 3D. Not the greatest film ever made (not even the greatest Ice Age film ever made) but as the target audience is seven year olds, not thirtysomethings, who are we to judge?
The bizarre thing was though, the cinema was packed with adults who had no apparent kids in tow. Sitting next to us was a couple who we imagine to be in their forties, sitting there in 3D glasses watching a kids film. With no kids. Unfathomable.
Anyway, we digress. The point of today’s rant is to explain for the uninitiated what going to the cinema in Bucharest means.
As we’re English, we chose the subtitled version of the film, so that we could enjoy the original soundtrack. And here is the biggest problem with the cinema in Romania. As Romanians do not need to hear what’s being said, they see no problem in talking the whole time. To them this is not rude or obnoxious (indeed, go to a dubbed version of an animated film and there will be virtual silence), they simply feel that as they do not need to hear anything they can chat away. And fair enough.
To us however silence in a cinema is golden – whatever the language of the film – but then I guess we have had a different upbringing.
The second problem is of course the universal mobile phone issue. A number of cinemas in France recently installed equipment that blocks mobile phone signals inside the cinema. Would that it be possible here, or in England, or anywhere people still insist on not turning their mobile phones off for an hour and a bit. Nobody is that important that they cannot survive 90 minutes without making or receiving a phone call, most of which are pointless anyway.
Yesterday, one girl in the row behind called a friend who was clearly still in the popcorn queue to say ’sa nu uiti sa-ti iei ochelarii de 3D la intrare in sala.’
Anyway, final word goes to number one son who on the way out said ‘that was great. When it comes out on DVD can you download it from the internet for me?’

QED QED – you really do have as long way to come – 4×4 (or Mercedes) = GOD therefore rules or morals or common decency don’t apply.

I would change the traffic rules too so that whoever’s got Mercedes should be given priority because he gives work to more people. It’s the least ordinary people can do to help him!

@MH: the F-wits probably have Mercedes, it’s normal to be first that’s why they bought Mercedes for. If they wanted to stay in line they would have bought Dacia.
There’s a big difference between spending 100.000 Euro on a Mercedes and giving work to hundreds of people in several countries and spending 8.000 Euro on a Dacia.
The rich people from the West who can afford expensive cars, clothes and stuff but they won’t buy it are very stupid. They generated the economic crisis. After all we live in Capitalism.
If we lived in Communism what you said earlier would have been ok because in Communism everyone is equal. But in Capitalism everyone struggles to have more money so they can stand more in front.

Ah ye – I forgot about paying for your parking when you leave – form an orderly queue – Ha – some people do but then the F-wits come see the long queue and just join the front – nobody says anything , no Boo to a goose – so they get away with it every time …………. probably then get into their car slewed across 2 spaces!!

Forgive them for they no not what they do – they are pig ignorant in the cinema, speaking alound (not whispering even), on their mobile phone, kicking the seat behind you , on one occasion last week an idiot got up and stood by the exit and shouted back to his friends somewhere at the back of the cinems ( film still running of course), but add to that you have to park in the Mall car park and find a space not partially occupied because the drivers do not care about anybody else’s right to park (or possibley they are just incapable of parking – because they are idiots). Wake up people of Romania – you want be part of Europe then ” manners maketh man!”

You’re lucky there were no black people in the film. They normally get the biggest laughs from the average Bucharest cinema audience – “uite, vine cioara”, “mama, ce buze are” etc etc

Me and my boyfriend (25 and 34) saw the movie and we loved it! I didn’t notice anyone with kids in the cinema, but then again I wasn’t paying very much attention.
And speaking during the movie IS very rude, at least to civilized people (yes, we do have those in Romania although you seem not to agree). That some moviegoers aren’t… that’s a different story. I saw Coraline a couple of months ago, dubbed in Romanian even, and the idiots behind me (in their late 20s) couldn’t shut their mouths for 10 minutes straight… “oooh, here comes her mother!” (yes, mr. Imbecile, we do have eyes.)
Here’s to people who know what a cinema is for…

If the target audience was happy then we can say the movie was a hit
