in Bucharest

As we explained a couple of weeks ago, our six year old is currently obsessed by metro trains, and in his quest for knowledge now spends the two hours he is allowed each day on the computer scouring You Tube for videos about metros.

Yesterday he came up with a gem. An original report on the opening (by Comrade Nicolae Ceausescu of course) of the first part of the Bucharest metro system, in 1979, from Timpuri Noi to Semanatorea:

Fast forward to 2.57 for a cracking bit of communist-era pole dancing.

What a great find. There's some communist history for you. Hard to imagine all the evil behind those Ceaucescu smiles. Sad to think those people had to be forced to do that showy praise and live through their inhuman, egomanic, dictatorship for another 10 years after this.

I am happy to report that I now am based between NYC and Bucharest. Romania was becoming just too lame for me.

Just amazing, since in 1979 in Maramures they had just reached the high Middle Ages! Romania never ceases to amaze me! Whereas in America in 1979 everyone drove a Pontiac, in Romania some rode the metro and others rode a horse drawn sleigh. Again I must emphasize the that you Craig are fighting an uphill battle. In Bucharest guys may drive BMWs M6s bur in Maramurres in 2009 they drive 700 year-old horse drawn carts! Welcome to a perverse level of backwardness! This is Romania where politicians love to be corrupt, the police love to steal and random people love to tell you cannot take a picture.
