Just What the City Needed

The Vodafone Bucharest Challenge 2007 is a non-entity of a motor racing event that threatens to cripple Bucharest for the best part of this week and next weekend. While we care not one jot about the trees that have been felled to make the view of the couple of hundred of spectators who will turn up a little better, we do care about the congestion that will be caused by the event.

Bucharest is not Monaco, and GT racing and the Dacia Logan Cup are not Formula 1. Romanians are not stupid, and know this, and in a refreshing show of disdain for crap, have refused to pay the obscene prices for race weekend tickets. Paying through the nose to watch top drivers in the best cars is one thing, paying through the nose to watch Formula 1 has-beens and never-weres driving Dacia Logans is another.

As such, the promoters are facing both the embarrassment of empty stands, and the threat of financial disaster.

Let’s hope that the scale of the flop is so great nothing similar is ever attempted again.
