According to Romanian tabloid Libertatea, the same hackers responsible for the attack last week on the Daily Telegraph’s website have struck again, this time at the French daily Le Monde.
The attack is in response to a French comedian making a rather bad-taste joke about Romanians on national French TV. The hackers are, once again, complaining at the fact that the term ‘Romanian’ is applied to Gypsies, insisting that Gypsies are not Romanians.
So, what kind of reaction has there been to this criminal act of digital vandalism?
Well, if the tone of the Libertatea piece and the comments posted underneath are anything to go by, then the hackers are being viewed as heroes: defenders of Romania’s honour against slanderous foreigners.
Which is all very well: each to their own opinions.
But surely there is a massive contradiction going on here?
If those Romanians who object to Gypsies being labelled as ‘Romanian’ do so because they believe Gypsies to be criminals giving Romania a bad name, then how can they also support criminal vandalism?
It makes no sense.
It is the same kind of contradiction that has many Romanians spouting the constitution whenever the word ‘autonomy’ is mentioned, while at the same time advocating the break up of the Republic of Moldova and the annexation of Bessarabia…

Like most Englishmen, I would be more than happy to see an independent Wales and an independent Scotland. The minute those countries vote for full independence, they will have it.

Why is the nationality of the observer so important to you? The finest observations of most countries are made by outsiders. Kapuscinski, Thubron, Marco Polo, Herodotus, Ibn Battutah. They weren’t writing about their home towns now were they? Read what people have to say, absorb their ideas, form your own opinions. And please by all means have opinions. Even about Wales.

As for the hackers, I fully approve them after trying myself for many years to complain to the PCC ( Press complaints commission) in UK and going nowhere. Romanians’ revolt for the way they are protrayed in the western media is at the boiling point. Expect more act like these, it is the only way the genuine Romanian voices to be heard.
Basarabia was good cow to milk some votes from. In essence nobody gives a shit about Basarabia.
However, there are some patterns that need to be reminded: while the middle-class educated Romanians that live and work in Romania voted for the democratic alliance at the presidential elections, the gypsies and stupid Romanians from abroad (who would have starved over here) together with the Moldovans voted for Basescu.
Obviously the Moldovans could be considered on same stage of mental development as the gypsies from abroad…
