Elena’s less than steamy ‘stranded tourist in Romania’ hotline

Romania’s Minister of Tourism, Elena Udrea, this morning announced the opening of a telephone hotline for foreign visitors stranded in Romania by the closure of the country’s airspace. Apparently, cheap hotel rooms will be made available.

Commendable.

(You can make up and insert your own joke about Elena Udrea, telephone hotlines and cheap hotel rooms here).

However, less commendable is the ministry’s communication strategy. Stranded visitors will not find out about the hotline by visiting the ministry’s Romanian-language website: it appears not to have been updated since January. The English version appears not to have been updated for quite some time.

The hotline number is 0800 86 82 82.

Although Romanian airspace is due to open again this afternoon, if you are flying to Northern Europe you are still likely to be stranded for another day or two at least. You could try and find a cheap Bucharest hotel room here, and then go get the beers in here.

The UK’s embassy in Bucharest has a useful website here.

And if you need a copy of Bucharest In Your Pocket to help you get around, just ask your concierge, or visit Tourist Information at Gara de Nord. If all else fails, download a free PDF version here.

Does Udrea’s hotline also offer advice about where to find a good massage?
