Reenact the Romanian Revolution! (Well, kind of).
Tonight at 21:00, in front of the Inter Continental hotel, a large crowd is expected to gather to remember the Romanian Revolution of December 1989. A big screen placed in front of the National Theatre will show film of what took place here 20 years ago, while there will also be a recital by the violinist Voicu Popescu.
If you can’t make it (or it’s too cold) the event will be shown on TVR3.

A balanced account of the “Revolution”.
Forgive my tabloid journalist’s approach, but:
1. John Simpson also stated that Elena Ceausescu fainted when she was taken into the courtyard, and that she was shot lying down. This is the first time I have come across this story. Can anyone confirm it?
Although John Simpson was reasonably well-informed, he could have done a bit more research for his interview with Iliescu, who I thought he allowed to get away with his version of the truth. In his book “A Mad World, My Masters”, Simpson, a seasoned journalist, describes the Romanian language as a “mixture of dog Latin and Esperanto”. See what I mean by “a bit more research”?
2. At least one witness declared that Elena Ceausescu “wet her pants” in fear when she realized that the sentence of death would be carried out immediately. How many sources are there in total for this report?
Incidentally, the building where the “trial” took place, including the courtyard, has now become part of Valahia University Targoviste, which bought it from the army. I heard this from the former Rector and other academic staff.
Nope, we have not had it. But I just found it on the iplayer, will watch it a bit later.
Has the John Simpson interview with Iliescu been broadcast in Romania? Fascinating to hear what he has to say about the revolution. He paints himself as a revolutionary hero and a man who has done nothing but sacrifice for his country. Snake. His description of the mineriada in particular is very disturbing.
