The commercial arm of the state news agency, Agerpres, is the only archive we know of specialist stuff from Romania’s past.
We really do wish there were other sources.
We got in touch with them earlier this week, about a photo we wanted to use to help illustrate a feature we are running on the Bucharest Metro in the next issue of Bucharest In Your Pocket.
This is the photo we wanted to use:
Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu wave to a photographer who will not see a penny of the fee Agerpres charge for using his work
The price? 175 lei plus VAT. So almost €50 to use (just the once) a photo they have sitting around doing nothing.
We said no thanks.
If anyone knows of another archive that has photos of Him and Her opening the Bucharest Metro we would be grateful for the tip.

Good idea, I’m gonna grab a BIYP myself, who knows what’s out there and I couldn’t find it yet…
Getty always worth a try for images old and new

I believe you should contact Adevarul newspaper because they are the reminiscence of the former “Scanteia” newspaper, fost organul de presă al Partidului Comunist Român if you understand what I mean
They probably have lots of pictures in their archive.
We have a solution. You will have to buy/grab/download a BIYP when it comes out next week to see how we got around the problem…
We’re prepared to pay, but a fair price. €50 to use it just once is not a fair price.
Jez lads, you cant have it all your own way!
On one hand you complain about people stealing your material yet you are not prepared to pay for the work of others!!!
Who can blame the copyright holders for attempting to make a buck?
I’m off to another blog to defend the judges and the prosecutors!
You know, yesterday I sent flowers to all the judges who are running Tribunalul Bucuresti (Bucharest Law Court), 4 ladies – one President and 3 Vice-presidents :X
And the message that I sent together with the flowers was: “Democracy is non-negotiable, not even with the IMF”.
I heard that my initiative was well received
@Davin: but they do extend the metro! Only that it takes a lifetime to do it
)
Why don’t they extend the metro all over so Bucharest is like any normal EU capital?! I’ve been getting around this week by using trams, buses, the metro and taxis. In Paris all I would have needed is the metro.
WOW as a travel writer myself i cannot help but be amazed by such things. I don’t know of any but if i find out, i’ll let you know.
