Crowds flocked to the 2007 and 2008 editions of the Bucharest Ring

Not since thousands of western liberals began trying to bring down the Iranian government by sending endless Twitter messages from the comfort of their offices has Twitter known such outrage: Bucharest City Council has cancelled the Bucharest Ring! How dare they!

Bucharest Ring? What the hell is that? The ring road that circles the city and is a popular place to pick up tarts? No. The Bucharest Ring was a typically ham-fisted effort to bring top class motor sport to the Romanian capital.

We wrote about it back when it first kicked off, in 2007. And again this year, when Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu first threatened to cancel it.

Here’s just a taste of the reaction of Romania’s outraged motor-racing Twitterati:

And, our favourite, from twitter.com/andreimutu:
Bucharest Challenge moves to Budapest. Bucharest loses 15.000 potential tourists

A potential 15,000 tourists? Spare me. Both times the race was previously held the stands were embarrassingly empty. Nobody bought tickets, so the organisers had to let people in for free in order to put bums on seats. Would it have been any different this year? No.

So good riddance Bucharest Ring. May you never darken our door, close our streets and cause a week of congestion again.

PS: Because I know you love to see it, here, one more time, is the ultimate proof that Bucharest and motor racing simply do not mix:

Bucharest Ring was supported by lots of fans. You only post a photo of empty stands from before the race took place to make us look bad like you always want to. Why don't you get lost?

My father had to move his car everytime Bucharest Ring took place. Very good, now he won't have to move his car anymore.
