Cristian Tudor Popescu (journalist, commentator, editor, analyst: choose your own moniker) denies in an interview with Evenimentul Zilei this morning that he intends running for president. (Romanians go to the polls in December and are expected to elect Traian Basescu again, by a big margin).
That’s a shame.
While Popescu may not be the ideal candidate (and may not make a great president) he is – rightly or wrongly – a heavyweight of the type who could pose Basescu real problems and who might actually turn the election into a genuine debate about where Romania should be heading.
Unless someone like Popescu does stand up to be counted the presidential election will be little more than a coronation.
