The Romanian justice system was last night reeling from the revelation that a judge had refused to release a dangerous criminal in exchange for a large cash bribe.
“This is scandalous,” said Ion Ionescu, head of Romania’s Justice Department. “This kind of thing gives Romanian judges a bad name. We can’t have people thinking we’re honest. The whole system would collapse, the very fabric of society threatened.
“We’ve got villas to build,” he concluded.
