Ryan Air, which currently flies one Romanian route, from Constanta to Pisa, Italy, announced today that it would begin flying two further routes next year: Constanta to Bologna, Italy, and Constanta to an unnamed city in Spain.
Corina Martin, head of the Association for the Promotion of the Romanian Coast, hailed the move as a big step forward.
Is it bollocks.
The flights will be used – as are the vast, vast majority of budget flights in and out of Romania – by migrant Romanian workers. And this is why Ryan Air is doing so well in Romania.
As Ryan Air themselves also stated today, Constanta Airport sees more baggage per passenger than any other airport on its network (basically meaning Romanians carry more luggage than anyone else. If you’ve been on a plane with Romanians you will know this already). As Ryan Air charges for all checked luggage and charges excess luggage fees for any bags weighing more than 15 kilos, you can imagine how much money they make out of their Romanian passengers.
No wonder they want to open up more routes, which is great for them and great for Romanian workers in Spain and Italy.
But please, spare us the crap about it being a catalyst for an increase in the number of foreign visitors to the Romanian seaside…

I wish they’d open up a route from Dublin to Bucharest. I hate Aer Lingus and there monopolistic charges..
